Understanding Immigration: Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

When arriving in Canada by air or transiting through a Canadian airport, most travellers require either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorizarion (eTA). There are a few exceptions, of course such as US citizens, but most visa-exempt travellers require an eTA.

An eTA is an authorization which is electronically linked to a passport. eTAs are applied for online and cost $7 CAD. Processing can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days.

An eTA is valid for 5 years or until the passport expires, which ever comes first. An eTA permits the holder unlimited entries into Canada for up to 6 months at a time during its validity. As with any visa, being approved for a visa doesn't guarantee entry to Canada. The holder must satisfy the officer during examination at the port of entry.
