Extended Family Members wishing to visit Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents and Persons Registered Under Canada’s Indian Act

Extended family members of Canadian citizens, permanent residents and persons registered under Canada’s Indian Act may enter Canada to visit you, as long as they:

  1. Receive authorization from the Canadian Government to travel to Canada

  2. Have the proper travel documentation (find out if your family member needs a visa or eTA, by completing the form here)

  3. Have a valid passport

  4. Are symptom-free of COVID

  5. Present proof that they are your extended family member, if requested

  6. Provide proof that you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person registered under Canada’s Indian Act, if requested

  7. Show proof that they will stay in Canada for 15 days or more or that they are travelling for a non-discretionary reason

  8. A quarantine plan for the first 14 days after their arrival at their final destination

Who qualifies as an extended family member?

From the perspective of the Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person registered under Canada’s Indian Act, an extended family member is your:

  • significant other (if you have been in a relationship for at least 1 year and have spent tim in person together at some point during your relationship)

  • adult child, adult step-child, partner’s adult child or partner’s dependent child

  • grandchild, step-grandchild or partner’s grandchild

  • grandparent or grandparent-in-law

  • sibling, half-sibling or step-sibling

  • brother or sister-in-law

How do you apply for authorization to travel?

  1. The Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person registered under Canada’s Indian Act must complete the application for authorization and statutory declaration form.

  2. The extended family member must sign the completed form.

  3. The Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person registered under Canada’s Indian Act must sign the form under solemn declaration.

  4. The extended family member must receive a copy of the completed and signed form.

  5. Apply for authorization by submitting the completed and signed form and other required documentation.
